A Telegram (TG) account can change its currently linked phone number. After the change succeeds, the account does not become a completely new account; existing contacts, cloud chats and media files remain.
If you try to change the number on a computer, Telegram may prompt you to use the mobile Telegram app. Therefore, use the official Telegram app on an iPhone or Android phone directly.
How do I change my Telegram phone number?
Follow these steps:
- Open the official Telegram app on your phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the phone number currently linked to the account.
- Select Change Number.
- Tap continue and select the country or region code for the new phone number.
- Enter the new phone number you want to link.
- Enter the verification code Telegram sends to the new number.
- After verification succeeds, the Telegram phone number is changed.
Will chat history disappear after changing the number?
No. After changing the number normally through Change Number, the original Telegram account remains, and contacts, groups, channels, cloud chats and media files continue to exist.
What if the new phone number is already registered with Telegram?
If the new phone number you plan to use is already linked to another Telegram account, you usually cannot directly move the current account to it. First handle the Telegram account already associated with that number, then change the number.
What should I note when changing the phone number?
Use a phone number that you can control for a long time and that can receive verification codes normally. After changing the number, you can also open Telegram's devices or active sessions page and check for login devices you do not recognize.
If you are only changing the linked number, you do not need to register a new Telegram account; use the official Change Number feature directly.
